After a number of outstanding performances in Group N, flying Finn Tommi Mäkinen, the future four-time world rally champion, made a minor start with Mazda in 1991 before being recruited by Nissan Motorsports Europe for a part-season in 1992. He began his season at the Monte Carlo Rally. For his very first participation in this very special rally, he managed to avoid the various challenges of the 1992 edition, and achieved a decent top 10 (9th place) in his first “Monte-Carl'”!
